The traditional village of Kinopiastes in the Messi region of Corfu is only 10km southwest from Corfu
town and the airport.
Old mansions of the 17th to 19th centuries, a marble church, a 17th century monastery and some
of the most famous restaurants on the island, are all good reasons to visit this village. Another good
reason is the island’s only Museum, devoted to the olive tree.
Music is a great tradition of the village and they have a very good philharmoniki (brass band), as well
as a wonderful church choir. In the height of summer there are often concerts held in the square and
the festival, held on august 15th, sees the village full to capacity with almost 1300 residents.
The Tripas taverna has been visited by former Greek president Constantine Karamanlis, French
president Francois Mitterand, actor Anthony Quinn, actress Jane Fonda and Aristotle Onassis, to
name just a few.
The main church is devoted to the Virgin Mary and it is in the central square. It is a traditional church
with unique architecture and an impressive marble entrance. Inside, there are frescoes of the 18th
century Ionian school of painting.
This is a well kept and beautifully painted village which also has a mini market and a café. All this information was kindly supplied from the books written by Steve Ford and the money raised from sales of these goes to Corfu Charities.
