This monument commemorates a piece of history not well known outside this island.
He was the most illustrious Russian naval commander and admiral of the 18th century, and a ally to Nelson.
Along with a Turkish squadron the Russian Admiral led a force to expel the French from Corfu in 1799, whilst granting them safe passage to retreat, for which he was criticized by the Tsar of Russia.
In favour of the inhabitants of Corfu he made the Ionian island a Russian protectorate, which lasted until 1807. So still today he is seen as a liberator by the local population.
