Douglas's obelisk, known as ′′ Dougal's column we find it at the contribution of the coastal avenue of Democracy and Alexandra Avenue. The English Baron Ward Douglas has been a commissioner in Corfu since 1835-1841. He founded the Ionian University, the mental hospital and founded the prison building. He also built most roads, founded various charities, published the Ionian codes and operated a telegraph office. The state decided to honor him with the commemorative obelisk in Upper Square opposite the position of Kapodistrias today, above NAOK. In 1907 due to land settling he was precipitated and transferred to where he was restored by contractor Andreas Curly. During the last war it suffered significant damage from the bombings but later restored. In 1956 and 1963 when the coastal Avenue of Garitsa was reconstructed in its current form, the rails it had and the curb were extended around the monument. Three sides of the base are copper embossed, works by Corfu sculptor I. Good morning. Embossed: one is Corfu, the other is Douglas's coat of arms and the third is his diadem. On the fourth side, a Greek sign in the archaic language tells the benefits offered by the responsible for Corfu.
