Its design is that of the Italian Renaissance period with its well manicured beds and canopy of trees. This tranquil area is located to the left of the entrance to the Old fortress. Named the Boschetto garden, which takes its name from the Italian bosco meaning forest, and the translation of the word Boschetto means shrubbery. There are a number of Busts located here, the heroic patriot and poet Lorentzos Mavilis (1860 – 1912) and to the left of Konstantinos Theotokis (1872 – 1923), one of the most important short story writers of modern Greece. There is an impressive statue of Count Frederick Guilford from 1766 to 1827 (See the link for more information) Behind him is the Contra Fossa, translated as moat, an area which divides the Old Fortress from the Esplanade. Many tourists that are familiar with the ITV series of The Durrells now flock here, as in 2006 a commemorative plaque was erected along with two new busts of The Durrells brother's Lawrence and Gerald who with their mother, Louisa, brother Leslie and sister Margo lived on Corfu from 1935 to 1939. Whose books made the island very famous.
