The New Fortress of Corfu was built between 1576 and 1645 by the Venetians on the hill of Saint Markos. many buildings were demolished in order to have enough materials to build it. Partially destroyed during the Second World War the new fortress is still lovely with its old paved access road and its gate with the ancient lions, which can be seen all around its walls and gated entrances which were the symbol of Venice. Positioned just above the old port and it is full of underground tunnels that run to the old fortress and the old Corfu town. Our pinpoint marks its entrance, which can be either from the open-air market walking through a tunnel under one of its imposing walls or from the square where the Jewish Holocaust Memorial is situated up the steps.
