The palace was commissioned by Sir Thomas Maitland, the British Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands ad designed in the Greek Revival style of neoclassical architecture, and it was the first building of that style to be constructed on Greek territory. It was designed by the British architect George Whitmore.
It served as the High Commissioner's residence but was also the home of the Ionian Senate and the Order of St Michael and St George. The foundation stone was laid on St. George's day in 1819, and it was completed in 1824. Now houses the Asian Arts museum and is well worth a visit, just to see some of the rooms and their decoration within the palace, especially the room of the order of St Michael and St George.
