One of the most famous and pretty squares located in the Campiello quarter of the old town, displays one of the original Venetian well's. Known as the Kremasti Fountain as it is in front of the church of the Virgin Mary, called “Kremasti” (hung out) because of the oil lamp hung in front of a faded by now fresco of the Virgin on the church’s outer wall. The well head carved with flowers and other symbols was constructed in 1699 by Antonis Kokkini, as a gift to the community. Pay particular attention to a stone which has a number of holes in it, as this is believed to the the only surviving example of the drainage system which the Venetians installed around the old town.
