Klimatia can be found off the main road heading south to Corfu town from the northern resorts of
Roda and Acharavi. Turn left after 5km and follow the country road for a further 3km, where you
can park next to the church on the right hand side. The village is a small community of around 300
including surrounding hamlets. There stands the imposing church of Saint George with a bell tower
on the opposite side of the road, which is not only unusual but also quite difficult to photograph.
A long walk uphill on an unpaved track above the village will take you to the Holy Trinity Orthodox
monastery. Original dates of worship go back to the 14th century and it has a beautiful collection
of frescoes and icons from the 17th and 18th centuries. With panoramic views, the monastery is
kept by the priests of the house and is rarely visited by tourists. There are no shops here and access
to the village is best on foot.
A few minutes drive down the road there is a turning for the Kato Vrisi springs which is signposted.
Follow the narrow track down and you will be greeted with a small, odd shaped, concrete
construction painted in white. Cross the small bridge and walk down to the collection of springs
that are flowing with fresh water even in August. You can fill your bottles here and take a well
earned rest whilst taking in the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. Often you will find you
are the only visitors there even at the height of the season. When I visited, there was an abundance
of turquoise coloured dragonflies feeding on the giant lily pad leaves. This water rich area in the
central north, comprising of Klimatia, Kiprianades and Nimfes, is well worth a visit as there are
many rare springs which are virtually worth their weight in gold.
