Peroulades is a beautiful, old Greek village located in the northwest of Corfu about 40km from
Corfu town and is currently under preservation for its cultural and architectural heritage from
Venetian times.
The village is set high above the sea, at the top of steep cliffs that drop down to a small beach. It is
well known for its spectacular sunsets. It is so far north that it has been called by some, “the village
that time forgot”.
There are a few tavernas here in the square mainly filled with walkers and sightseers travelling
through. The population is of around 800 and the church is devoted to Saint Nicholas. Some of the
houses are deserted now but as the crisis in Athens deepens, locals in the villages all over Corfu
expect family members to return to their places of birth and once again fill the streets as they did
generations ago.
Although the main income here is from the olive groves, many of the people work in the surrounding
tourist areas, the main one being Sidari.
Many people who have repeat holidays in Sidari have a soft spot for Peroulades and return each
year to eat in their favourite taverna or kafenion as they have become friends with the local people.
Only a few kilometres from Sidari are some great places to visit. There is the Canal D’Amour with its
weathered rock formations and small coves, which can be accessed from the road via the village square and in our opinion is not to be missed. its an area that was used for the filming of the ITV series The Durrells. Loggas Beach for its famous sunsets and Cape Drastis
where the rocks dramatically protrude into the sea. All this information was kindly supplied from the books written by Steve Ford and the money raised from sales of these goes to Corfu Charities.
