Traffic on the main artery northwest often slows to a near halt, as it snakes through the narrow
main street of Skripero. Traffic lights through the village though, have brought a sense of order to
this busy gateway to the north. Skripero is a large village located 18km northwest of Corfu town
with rich history and culture, mostly known for its philharmonic society that was founded in 1909
and is still active. Skripero also has old Venetian mansions and an excellent folklore tradition. It
is the administrative centre for much of central northern Corfu and has a population of around
600. There is a shop, a kafeneion and a taverna all located on the busy main road. The pace of life
however is a typically slow one, as the locals simply ignore the passing traffic and continue with
their everyday lives. There are the churches of Saint Stephen and Yperageia Theotokos Liviotissa
and the monastery of Yperageia Theotokos Vlachernon.
Most people pass through the Skripero and remain unaware of what the village has to offer. I found
it was a good place to stop for a rest because of its central location to all central and northern
resorts. Park your car and head for the taverna or kafeneion and sit and watch the traffic pass by as
you enjoy your break. Look opposite and you will see the green canvas backdrop of Mount Tsouka
rising above to 620 metres and creating a frame for the main church elevated in front of you. Order
your food or drinks and whilst you are waiting, wander up past the church where there is a maze of
tracks with more tumbling down old houses than occupied ones.
About 3km further northwest, at the top of the ridge, Troumbeta is an important junction, with
shortcuts to Paleokastritsa and Agios Georgios (NW) bearing west on either side of the village,
while the main road veers towards the north coast and resorts of Sidari, Acharavi and Kassiopi.
