If you ever wondered what it would be like to drive a Ferrari grand prix racing car around a track with
hairpin bends, then the drive to this village is for you. I decided to approach the village from the
north so that after my visit I could take in the scenery by driving downhill. I wasn’t disappointed, the
views are magnificent. Most people take the ascent from Ano Korakiana where you will encounter
over twenty hairpin bends going uphill to a height of 500 metres on the wrong side of the road! I
counted twenty three on the way down.
Rumour has it that the road was built by an Englishman but I can’t find anyone to confirm this. The
main church is devoted to the Saint Panagia and the local panigiri or festival falls on 15th August.
Sokraki is built on Korakio mountain, which lies on the eastern side of the Troumpeta range of
mountains which reach a height of 620 metres at Mount Tsouka.
The village is unique as it is famous for its diverse views. Looking south in the morning you can
watch the sunrise and see the southern tip of Corfu. Looking north in the evening you can watch
the sunset and see the satellite islands of Othoni, Mathraki and Erikousa.
The square is immaculate with crazy paving and well painted buildings. There are a couple of café
bars a and a very smart olive wood shop selling tasteful souvenirs. The walls outside the houses
are adorned with an eclectic range of pots containing flowers and shrubs. Emily’s café is the
most famous one in the village for the ginger beer that it serves which is made in the factory at
Kalafationes. There are many churches here and one is called “The entry of the most holy Theotokos
into the temple”... Try remembering that after a few ouzos! Another village covered by the self-guided app Corfu Narratour, Pantokrator Drive.
