The best way to reach the village is from the main road and its important that you use the car parks and DO NOT TRY DRIVE INTO THE HEART OF VILLAGE. Chlomos is an old village dating back to the 13th century. The brother of Thomas Palaiologos, the last
Byzantine despot, lived here and there are a few remains of a 14th century church. Chlomos means
“Pale of face”. The original villagers lived down on the land by Issos beach and were ravaged by
sickness, malaria and pirate raids so were “very pale”. So, they moved up the mountainside to settle
where they are now and these days are a little darker in complexion!
The village lies 30km south from Corfu Town on the Lefkimmi road and sits 330 metres up on mount
Kavalovouni with views to the sea on the west and east coasts. It is a quiet village with a few tavernas,
a church and a population of around 500.
The views from the Orthodox church of Taxiarchai at the top of the hill are spectacular and well
worth a visit. To the east there are views of the coast, the Ionian sea and the Greek mainland and to
the west there are views of the coast and the Adriatic sea. The houses are grouped together with no
room for extensions so some of the residents have built upwards and many now have a third floor or
attic which is unusual outside of Corfu town.
Many of the houses are painted in pastel which brings a pleasing and relaxing sense of colour to the
village. Photos taken at the top of the village looking down take in the ochre tiled rooftops of the
houses. All this information was kindly supplied from the books written by Steve Ford and the money raised from sales of these goes to Corfu Charities. Please use the link below to download your own copy and find more information on all the villages listed and more from Steve
