Argirades is a large picturesque village situated on the main road south to Lefkimmi and is 33km
south of Corfu Town. The population numbers over 1,000 and was the administrative centre for the
Korrision municipality. As you approach the village from the busy main road you are greeted by the
mighty church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John). At 100 metres above sea level, there are views from the
church of the sea of the west and east coasts. On the opposite side of this road is the main school
building, so the children have to cross this road every day during term time. The main road was built
some fifteen years ago to link Lefkimmi port and the resort of Kavos in the south with Corfu town
via the junction at Messonghi.
There are many festivals and religious celebrations here as Argirades has retained its cultural roots
and remains true to its traditions. The festival of the Holy Spirit is held on 24th June at the Holy
Trinity church in the heart of the village. The main occupations of the villagers are agriculture and
tourism. The nearest resort is the 12km beach at Agios Georgios southwest which is only 2km away
on the twisting road downhill from the village. The houses here reflect the influence of the Venetian
period, as Argirades was a strategic centre at that time. The name derives from the word Argyros
which would have been an important family or persons surname and dates back to Byzantine times. The village lanes are very narrow and are best seen by foot or scooter. Many of the houses are whitewashed and flower
pots adorn every ledge. The village was declared a preservation site in 1977 as many of the houses
are old. Some of them have now been renovated. A few kilometres north is Lake Korrision which is a
must see for those interested in the diverse wildlife of the Island.
