Agios Mattheos is 24km southwest of Corfu town and is set in beautiful woodland on the hillside
of the slopes of Mount Gamilios. The village has 1,600 inhabitants whose main income comes from
farming and the collection of olives. As in many villages today, locals also work in the summer
months in the nearby tourist resorts of Moraitika and Messonghi.
Another traditional occupation is the cultivation of vineyards, from which they produce the famous
kakotrighis wine; a clear, lightly flavoured white wine. The village panigiri is held on 6th August after
five days of pilgrimages to the monastery on the top of the hill of the Pantokrator (The Lord). Agios
Mattheos is a picturesque village with narrow, winding whitewashed lanes and many traditional
coffee shops and tavernas lining the main road. The village is surrounded by a large and dense forest,
where the outlaws of the early 19th century used to hide among the myrtle trees and the heather.
A paved road leads to the monastery of Pantokrator and the Grava cave. The views from here are
magnificent. From Agios Mattheos, a road leads to Paramonas; a fabulous sandy beach surrounded
by grey rocks and decorated with a few small rocky islands, further out in the sea. Another road,
starting just before the village of Agios Mattheos, leads south to the small and quiet beaches of
Prasoudi, Kanouli and Skidi. The beautiful sweeping bay of Alonaki is at the northernmost edge of
      Korission Lake.
On the road from Agios Mattheos to Chalikounas is where the perennial spring at Gardiki can be
found. These springs not only give water to the inhabitants of the area but also to the nearby villages.
This area is dominated by the ruins of its Byzantine castle, which was probably built in the 13th
century by Michael the II, Despot of Epirus. All this information was kindly supplied from the books written by Steve Ford and the money raised from sales of these goes to Corfu Charities.
