      Kato Korakiana is also known as Katomeri which means “lower place”. 20km northeast from Corfu
      Town, the village lies at a height of 100 metres above sea level and is near the tourist resorts of Dassia
      and Ipsos.
      A big village with a population of around 950 , its history goes back more than five hundred years
      and has attracted many famous poets and royalty. There are several churches here including saint
      Nicholas and saint Demetrius. The Turks invaded in 1537 (Barbarossa) and again in 1716. Besides
      the threat of the raids the whole region suffered land slides, some of which account for myths and
      legends. A geological phenomenon in the area, which was descovered before World War II, is a tunnel
      (Grava tou Menigou). The locals will tell you that it leads to an underground river; which flows under
      the sea and into the coasts of Ambrakikos Bay, near Preveza on the Greek mainland.
      This is where the 19th century Greek poet Gerasimos Markoras lived and worked, and nearby the
      house of the 20th century lyrical poet Lorentsos Mavillis. Here you will find the medieval Castello
      Mibelli villa of the Polylas family . The Castle has been visited by many famous people from Europe;
      among them, The Emperor of Austria Franz Josep, the Emperor of Germany Keiser Willelm, the king
      of Italy, Vittorio Emmanuelle, the kings of Greece, George I and George II (who settled permanently
      here from 1936 till 1939). It was also here in 1844 that the Italian brothers Emilio and Attilio Bandiera
      planned an attempted rebellion in Southern Italy: unfortunately this didn’t happen due to betrayal.
