Paleokastritsa’s coastline with small bays and coves have been viewed by many travellers, over the
years, from the village in the hills above. This is the village of Lakones, from which you can best enjoy
the landscape of the region. Looking down to the crystal clear waters below and contours of the
coastline is a truly breathtaking view.
In summer there are traffic lights operating on the main road through the village; as the road is so
narrow in parts, you wouldn’t want to squeeze past an oncoming car. Believe me: I have done it. There
are a couple of great tavernas here and the church of saint Nicholas stands proud in the square for
the 500 residents. The name Lakones probably originates from the displacement of people from the
mainland (Sparta is the capital of Lakonia). As you come up the winding road from Paleokastritsa,
look for a left hand turn to Lakones. The upwards leading, snaking road will take you to the village.
You can stop just short if it and walk around the streets. Afterwards, drive through and stop at Bella
Vista: its name says it all.
Every day dozens of tourists gather on the balconies of the rented rooms and in the tavernas to
admire the unique panorama. Telescopes are permanently installed on open, flat areas to help you
enjoy the view in more detail. In my opinion this is one of the best views in the Mediterranean.
The village itself, with its narrow, well kept streets and Venetian houses, is just as pretty as the view.
You can also walk to Paleokastritsa along the path, which is lined with pine trees. If you are around
the west coast then you must surely visit Lakones. I think it will give you the inspiration to visit more
of Corfu’s beautiful and varied villages. You can now have a self-guided tour of this area by using the app Corfu Narratour. It starts from the junction where you turn up to Lakones and continues through what's known as the back door of Corfu. It offers lots of information and visits many places, with stunning views and beaches ending in the village of Doukardes. All this information was kindly supplied from the books written by Steve Ford and the money raised from sales of these goes to Corfu Charities.
