If you are on holiday in the resort of Agios Gordios, there are a cluster of small villages just a few
kilometers walk away. Kato Garouna, Ano Pavliana, Kato Pavliana and Pendati are all within reach of
Agios Gordios but there are some very steep climbs here. The reward though is well worth it. There
are fantastic views over the bay and the famous Ortholithi rock.
If you follow the road that leads to Ano Garouna village, you can wander through the picturesque
narrow paths of the village. Follow the uphill road which starts from the village square and it will
lead you up to Panteleimonas mountain. It is here that you can see Agios Gordios down below and
from the other side, the town of Corfu.
Carry on up to the Panteleimonas mountain, where there is the starting point for the Corfu
paracending club. Watch them as they run and leap off the edge of the mountain to catch the
thermals. These keep them in the air for what seems ages before they land smoothly on Agios
Gordios beach - hopefully missing the crowds of sunbathers.
Pendati is worth visiting for the interesting church of Panaghia Odigitria (The Holy Virgin, The
Leader) dating from the 19th century. It also has a marvellous view of the Ionian Sea.
The local festival, or panigiri, takes place on the 26th of October. It is held in honour of Aghios
Dimitrios and many people attend from the villages nearby.
